There is something that no one has been talking about, when it comes to goal setting. And it's the one thing that can make the difference between joy and frustration. And if you don't know about it, it is likely to sneak up on you and bite you in the...
I would go as far as to say that it is even just as important as or even more important than goal setting.
So what is this big thing already?
Have you ever set a goal and then maybe even celebrated it, realizing, "holy *#@*%! I've done it. I've achieved my goal … yes!," only to then lose it or have it go away? Frustrating isn't it!
Well, how would you like to learn how to break this cycle and actually keep your goals when you achieve them?
The issue I want to tell you about is goal keeping.
That's right... keeping your goals.
What do I mean by this? Everyone talks about and teaches about setting your goals and how to identify your goals and how to write them down and look at them every day and to focus on achieving your goals.
But the hard truth is that you can't achieve your goal, and then keep it, by staying the same person who set the goal way back when. That's right, we have to grow. It means we have to change, and for most people change can be challenging, especially if you don't know you need to. Wow! Especially then.
So a good question to ask your self is how do I change and grow to become the person who can keep this goal?
Another way of approaching it is to get clear on two things:
- What kind of person was I at the time when I first set the goal (how I show up, my habits good and bad, how giving was I, how grateful was I, how well did I communicate, how productive was I, etc.)?... and...
- Who do I need to become in order to keep it? (Where do I need to improve; what kind of person could easily keep this goal and be ready for more?) When it comes down to it, in order to have more, we need to become more. And to me, becoming more means, learning to manage more, to take on more responsibility, give more, communicate even more, and be more productive, and commit even more and to be even more grateful.
